12:00 pm - Dear Yuletide Author....
First of all, yay you for signing up for Yuletide! It's the highlight of my fannish year and I think it's some of the most fun fandom has to offer. With that in mind, I'll preface this by saying that what I want most from you is for you to enjoy writing your story. While I'm always pleased and flattered when a writer includes my details, part of the fun of Yuletide for me is the adventure, and if you come up with a story that's nothing to do with my optional requests but that you had a lot of fun writing, I'll enjoy reading it just as much.

The contents of this letter are more-optional-than-optional. Everything essential to my requests is already in the details, and what's below is mostly a bit of a ramble on why I like the fandoms/characters/pairings, and perhaps a couple of extra story ideas. Feel free to pick and choose, or to skip this entirely - I certainly wouldn't want you to get bogged down trying to cater to my every whim :)

General likes and dislikes )

On to the requests! )

Stalking made easy )

Thanks again for being my super-awesome writer, and have fun with Yuletide!

OK, so a mere six months or so after I bought it, I've got round to the first round of uploading to my journal at Dreamwidth. It now contains all of my posted fanfics, including the really terrible Buffy/Giles stuff I wrote when I was thirteen or so, and excluding only the fics I can't currently find copies of. In a spirit of celebration, have a meme:

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

1:11 pm - Quick update
Hi everyone - I am still alive! I've also just finished moving house and am working eight hour days with an hour to two hours' commute at each end, hence not having managed to post any fics yet :( But they're on their way, and I'm very much looking forward to the [info]yuletide sign-ups opening. And NaNoWriMo! This year I'm not planning on entering officially, but I do want to hit the word count by writing three or four short stories, one of which will be a reworking of my NaNo project from 2007. Anyone else planning to take the plunge this year?

OK, I haven't completed a fic since Yuletide and I'm feeling stuck in a rut. First five people to comment get a 500ish word short for a prompt/pairing of their choice. My fandoms include but are not limited to:

Buffy (not Angel)
Harry Potter
Star Trek (TOS and AOS)
Batman (Nolanverse or comics)
West Wing
Watchmen
New Who & Torchwood
Master and Commander
Tortal
Sherlock Holmes
Final Fantasys 7, 8 & 10
Pet Shop of Horrors
The Persuaders
Red Dwarf

... and a whole bunch of one-shot movies and books, so if there's something a bit obscure that you'd like to see fic in, feel free to ask :) Cheers!

OMG I totally win at Yuletide. I love my story. (Brett/Danny and dates and misunderstandings and hilarity and squeeeeeeeeee!) My recipient loves their story. I am filled with glee. YAY YULETIDE!

Oh, and happy Christmas everyone, if you're into that :P

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your kind wishes on the last post.

Details about the job, for the curious. )

In other news, I am so going to love this film, and purism be damned. They might as well be marketing it just at me!

I have an interview for something pretty close to The Dream Job this Wednesday. I'd appreciate your good thoughts, and if you happen to believe in any deities, please put in a good word for me.

OK, M. Night Shyamalan? We are officially through. I defended The Village, I pointed out the good parts in Signs, I liked Lady in the Water, I even refrained from mocking The Happening. But seriously,

WHAT THE SHIT IS THIS?

There is no reason for this. There is not even a fucking excuse for this. When presented with a fully realised fantasy world that was carefully, deliberately based on Asian legends rather than European ones, and carefully, deliberately populated with ethnically diverse Asian characters, THERE IS NO POSSIBLE EXCUSE for making your main cast white. Fuck that reactionary, racist bullshit, and I swear if this casting goes through then nobody involved in this film is going to see any of my money, EVER AGAIN. AAARGH.

P.S. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a genuinely great show, for those of you who have no idea what this is about, and I definitely recommend buying it on DVD as a legitimate form of protest. And source of awesome.

7:16 am - Dear Yuletide Santa...
First of all, thanks for doing Yuletide! It's one of the highlights of my fannish year and I hope you have an awesome time with it. Anything I mention below is totally secondary to you having fun writing your story, and you should feel free to ignore it all, especially if you already have a bunny.

Letter under the cut. )

Thanks again, and have a great Yuletide!

Can't remember where I first saw this and saved it from, but I've been waiting to post it for FOUR FUCKING YEARS.

Jan Schakowski, a Congresswoman from the Chicago area, attends a Congressiongal Black Caucus event at which Bush tries to mingle. Bush notices a button she's wearing and begins yelling at her in outrage. " *Osama*? How can you even be wearing that in here?"

She says, "It doesn't say Osama. It says OBAMA. As in Barak Obama."

"Obama?" Bush sputters. "Never heard of him."

"Oh, don't worry," she says. "You will."

We're winning. It's slow, and it's painful, but we're FUCKING WINNING. FUCK YES AMERICA.

... yeah. I wanted this to happen then, but I could never quite believe it would. I'm so happy I'm crying.

1:39 am - Happy election night everyone!
I'm sitting here sipping Pina Colada, eating pizza, and thinking I may yet make it to bed before four.... Also, the BBC is so clearly rooting for Obama to win, it's hilarious.

ETA 2.04: Holy crap, Fox is calling Ohio for Obama. That's gotta hurt.

Happy Glorious 25th, everyone. And also happy Towel Day, of course. I had some pretty odd looks in the library which I attribute to wearing a towel draped around my shoulders :) I'm not dead, just hellishly busy, so sorry for not being around much. Rest assured you are all very much in my thoughts, especially the ones that have exams.

I went to bed somewhat disheartened at 2.30 last night, having made shockingly little progress on the essay I'd been working on for almost the previous 12 hours. I didn't get to sleep for another two hours because my teeth hurt.

But when I looked out of my window this morning, the campus was covered in snow, and it was beautiful, and I wandered to my lecture taken pictures of all the frosted greenery. And I've just got back an essay that was like pulling teeth to write and discovered I've got the first first of my university career.

All in all, today doesn't seem so bad :)

11:13 pm - Yuletide recs
This is as much for my own convenience as anyone else's - I like to have my favourites in one place. I'm barely halfway through my reading (haven't even touched the Dorothy L Sayers or Tamora Pierce stories yet), so expect this to grow.

First of all, I have to mention my own gift, Bedtime Story. It's a sweet bit of femmeslash set early on in Wicked, and caters to my narrative kinks beautifully; I like few things better than characters telling each other stories, especially when those stories reflect their own lives in some way. Here, a simple fairy tale becomes a reflection on those born blessed, and those born cursed. Galinda's optimism and Elphaba's clear-sighted pragmatism balance each other to create a delicate, bittersweet tone.

16 more recs behind the cut. )

1:16 pm - Minor Yuletide squee
I have been recced! I've been recced at least twice for both my main story and my pinch hit. This has never happened to me before, and it's terribly exciting. Not to mention the number of reviews I'm getting (and I will be responding personally to every single one on New Year's Day). Can't wait to produce my own list - it's going to be fairly sizable, there's so much good fic out there this year.
